David Robert Macdonald was born on November 1, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois. He received a B.S. from Cornell University in 1952, and a J.D. from the University of Michigan in 1955. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957. From 1957 to 1962, Macdonald was an attorney with the Chicago firm of Kirkland, Ellis, Hodson, Chaffetz & Masters, and from 1962 to 1972 he was a partner with the Chicago firm of Baker & McKenzie.
